Stabilized Regular Or Loop Household Scissors

--- "DO IT YOURSELF" ENTRY -------DESRIPTION: Household loop scissors (that include finger holes in addition to the loop handle) or regular household scissors mounted onto a wooden base.
PURPOSE: To enable students who have severe motor limitations to participate in cutting tasks. Following are some of the ways in which stabilized loop scissors have been used:
The student presses the scissors with the dominant hand while an adult turns the paper.
The student presses the scissors with a mouth stick and uses their functional hand to turn the paper.
The student presses the scissors with their poorly coordinated hand and uses their coordinated hand to turn the paper.
For those students who find it easier to pull a regular scissor handle rather than press down on spring loaded (loop) scissors, regular household scissor may be substituted for the household loop scissors.
MATERIALS USED:
1.11 inch long x 4 ½ inch wide x ¾ inch thick piece of wood for the base
2.3 inch square by ½ inch thick piece of wood for the angled support
3.Household loop scissors for regular household scissors
If the student finds it easier to pull rather than push a scissors handle, substitute a regular pair of kitchen scissors for the household loop scissors and follow remaining directions as written.
TOOLS:
Band saw or table saw to cut out rectangle base
Jigsaw or coping saw to cut out angled support
Drill and router bit or wood chisel to indent wooden base.
Glue gun and hot glue.
Pencil.
Sandpaper.
Woodclamp.
PREPPARATION:
1.Cut out 11 inch long x 4 ½ inch wide rectangle base from the ¾ inch thick piece of wood. Sand all edges.
2.Position the scissors on top of the base with the scissor tips angled slightly upward and use a pencil to trace the contact area between the bottom finger loop and the base. Use a router bit or wood chisel to carve out the interior of the tracing to form a ¼ inch deep groove. Sand the carved area.
3.Make the angled support.
a.With the scissors positioned at the desired angle on the base (and the bottom finger loop nestled in the ¼ inch deep groove), place the 3 inch square by the ½ inch thick piece of wood vertically against the scissors.
b.Trace the underside of the bottom scissors handle beginning approximately ¼ inch from the junction screw of the scissor blades and ending where the scissors meets the top surface of the wooden base.
c.Draw a line from the highest point of the tracing (near the junction of the scissors blades) straight down to the bottom of the piece of wood where it meets the base.
d.Use a jigsaw or coping saw to cut along the lines.
e.Sand the edges of the angled support.
4.Use hot glue to attach the angled support to the wooden base. Clamp until dry.
5.Position the scissors on the scissors stand and apply hot glue to secure the bottom finger loop into the groove in the base.
Ways to Adapt this Activity
If desired, the angled support can be screwed into the base instead of or in additional to being glued.
