--- DO IT YOURSELF ENTRY --------- PURPOSE: To create a do-it-yourself (DIY) assistive device for people with grasping or other upper extremity disabilities and older adults to use for carrying groceries into the home. Step 1: From the center of a plastic clothes hanger (where the hook is) measure 3 inches to each side and using a dremel or another cutting tool to cut the hanger on both sides. Step 2: Take a piece of Sugru (or another type of silicone rubber putty) about the size of one and a half golf balls and wrap it around the center of the hanger at the bottom, making sure to cover both side portions extending from the center post completely. To ensure that the Sugru is firmly in place mold it to your hand. The better the Sugru is modeled to the user's hand the more comfortable it will be to use. An alternative to Sugru is duct tape. Follow the instructions in Step 1 then wrap the duct tape around as many times as necessary until the grip feels comfortable. Once the Sugru or the duct tape has firmly set the hook is ready to be used. The hook can allow the user to carry multiple shopping bags in one hand. MATERIALS: A plastic clothes hanger, Sugru (or another type of silicone rubber putty) or duct tape. TOOLS: A dremel or cutting tool, and measuring tape or ruler. SKILLS REQUIRED: Basic craft ability.
