Public can help honor veterans with wreaths at cemeteries

Appeal-Democrat - 11/1/2017

Nov. 01--The public is being asked to help honor the thousands of military veterans in cemeteries in Yuba-Sutter this holiday season through Wreaths Across America, a project coordinated with a ceremony in December at Arlington National Cemetery.

Participants are asked to purchase a wreath to be placed on individual headstones by volunteers. Costs are $15 for each wreath or $30 for three.

As of Oct. 31, 313 wreaths had been purchased, said Tom Walther, a local project organizer. A total of 6,642 veterans are listed in eight local cemeteries registered with the program.

Participating cemeteries are Sutter, Meridian, Noyesburg, Yuba City, Live Oak, Sierra View, Lofton and Wheatland.

Checks, payable to Wreaths Across America and with the name of the cemetery in the memo section may be mailed before Nov. 24 to Yuba-Sutter Veterans Stand Down, 604 D St., Marysville CA 95901.

Sponsors can also purchase wreaths online through Nov. 27 at wreathsacrossamerica.org. They must include the name of the cemetery desired or the donation will be credited toward Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

The wreath-laying ceremony is at 9 a.m.Dec. 16. Volunteers are also needed to help with the local ceremonies.

Organizations taking part include the Soroptimist Club of Marysville-Yuba City, to honor all the female veterans at Sutter Cemetery; and the Rotary Club of Yuba City, honoring veterans at the Yuba City Cemetery.

The Wheatland 4-H Club is selling wreaths for the Wreaths Across America project from 4 p.m.-8 pm. Nov. 11 at Big Al's Market, 442 Main St.

Yuba Sutter Veterans Stand Down coordinated the area's first participation in the national project in 2016, with 1,989 wreaths sponsored for the seven participating cemeteries.
