The FrontRower is a rowing system designed for use by individuals with upper extremity and mobility disabilities. This system enables the rower to face forward while rowing, requires the use of two limbs in any combination (two arms, two legs, or an arm and a leg), and can be used for solo rowing or with a passenger. The system is designed for use in canoes, narrow rowing boats, or as a replacement for the rear-facing rowing system in Alden Ocean Shells. The unit has a comfortable seat with a backrest that adjusts fore and aft to accommodate the height of the user. The oars (included) are attached at their innermost ends to oarlocks mounted on the attached central uprigger. The oarlocks are spring loaded to lift the oars up out of the water when at rest. The oarlocks also rotate a quarter turn for feathering the oars. To row with the arms only, the user grips the handles, rotates the oars to the blade vertical position, pushes the blades down into the water, and pulls the oars toward the user for the power stroke forward. To row with the legs only, the user utilizes the pedals in front of him or her. The pedals are attached to ropes which pass under the seat, around some pulleys, and forward to the oars. The ropes pull the oars back on the power stroke as the pedals are pushed forward. The ropes also pull the oars down into the water and rotate them into the blade vertical position. Return springs on the uprigger pull the oars forward and rotate them into the feathered position at the end of the power stroke. The pedals operate independently, so each oar can be controlled separately. To turn, the user takes a longer stroke on one side. For combined arm/leg rowing, one or both arms and one or both legs can be used. The FrontRower rests on suction cups which conform to the bottom shape of most canoes and which hold the unit in place in most smooth-bottom boats. For other boats, captive hold-down screws are provided which thread into mounting brackets (optional) installed in the bottom of the boat. The unit is removable and the ropes disconnect for transport and storage. The oars also snap apart for transport and storage. OPTIONS: Power handles to help increase upper body power, mounting bracket, passenger seat, demonstration videotape, and a riser/transfer board unit to enable wheelchair users to transfer independently.
