---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a prosthetic hand for a child born without fingers on his right hand and an individual who lost four fingers in an accident. Richard Van As, a developer from South Africa, developed a a prosthetic replacement for his hand that had already lost four fingers in an accident. Working alongside Washington-based prop manufacturer Ivan Owen, they created the "Robohand," which has also been fitted on a five-year old child in South Africa. This budget-priced prosthetic is functions best when grabbing objects. It comprises relatively simple parts, including nylon cord, rubber thimbles for the fingers and cables. The use of a 3D printer helped develop a portion of the parts. The entire project costs approximately $150, which is significantly less than a high tech robotic hand. AUTHOR: Edwin Kee.
